Description: Universiti Malaya, the first University of the country, is situated on a 750-acre (309-hectare) campus in the southwest of Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia.

The University of Malaya grew out of a tradition of service to the society. Its predecessors, the King Edward VII College of Medicine established in 1905 and Raffles College in 1929, has been established to meet urgent demands, one in medicine and the other in education. When the two came together to form the University of Malaya in October 1949, this was so that they might perform together an even greater service - to help lay the foundations of a new nation by producing a generation of skilled and educated men. Hence the University of Malaya was established on 8 October 1949 as a national institution to serve the higher education needs of the Federation of Malaya and Singapore.

The growth of the University was very rapid during the first decade of its establishment and this resulted in the setting up of two autonomous Divisions in 1959, one located in Singapore and the other in Kuala Lumpur. In 1960, the government of the two territories indicated their desire to change the status of the Divisions into that of a national university. Legislation was passed in 1961 founding the University of Malaya on 1st January 1962.

Today, with over 15,000 students, 2,000 full-time faculty and 2,500 staff, the University of Malaya is the largest university in Malaysia with a committment to the pursuit of excellence.

The University motto, "Ilmu Punca Kemajuan" (Knowledge is the Key to Success) reflects the philosophy of the University, constantly striving for knowledge in all fields to produce successful graduates and a successful nation.

Eleven Faculties, 2 Academies, 4 Centres and an Institute of Advanced Studies offer a wide range of academic and professional degree programmes in an environment which provides the best in teaching and research facilities, including the largest library in Malaysia. With over 80 clubs and societies, students are provided with the opportunity for self-development in an exciting variety of extra-curricular activities.

Univeristy Malaya has the following mission. To be a premier university

The students are expected to put their education to work in service of others - a distinction that sets Silliman apart from other institutions of higher learning.

As an institution of faith, the University is committed to provide opportunities for the academic community to seek truth, justice and love -- Christian values which permeate every facet of Silliman campus life.

From an initial enrollment of 15 boys in 1901, the student population of Silliman University is approximately 7,000 coming from various parts of the country and abroad.

The faculty and student body are made up of representatives of many religious faiths. Description: Prince of Songkla University was the first university to be established in the southern region of Thailand. It was set up with the purpose of extending opportunities for tertiary education to the south, in order to raise the educational standard and support the development of the region. The university was planned as a multi-campus institution with the capabilities of acting as a center of higher academic learning and of responding, in a realistic and practical manner,to the developmental needs of the southern region.

Prince of Songkla University was established during a period of intense development of the country. The committee overseeing the establishment of the university, under the chairmanship of His Excellency Colonel Thanat Khoman, Chairman of the Committee for Development of the Southern Region, named it University of the South. Subsequently, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej graciously bestowed the royal name of Songklanagarind (Prince of Songkla) upon the university, after the royal title of this father, His Royal Highness Prince Mahidol of Songkla. In the 1967 academic year , Prince of Songkla University enrolled its first students, who undertook their studies in temporary premises in Bangkok. The university later transferred its students to its own campuses at Tambol Roosamilae, Pattani Province, in 1968, and at Tambol Kohong, Hat Yai, Songkhla Province, in 1971.

The first ten years of development saw the steady expansion of academic disciplines, during which time a high academic standard was being emphasized. In the following five years, the university played an increasing role in the provision of academic services to the community in parallel with a diversification of academic disciplines in response to the needs of the region and country. During the last five years, the university has increased both its research output and the variety of academic services offered to the community. Several new units were established to support this expanding role and to provide the university with the capability to cooperate usefully in national economic and social development, specially that of the southern region.
