At present, teaching programmes are limited to service teaching for students taking degrees in Education, in line with the requirements of Negara Brunei Darussalam for locally-produced secondary and primary school teachers. The department provides courses which will enable successful students to teach Biology to a prescribed level, and in more general terms, to appreciate the importance of Biology in the development of Brunei Darussalam. Field trips and field courses are integral parts of the curriculum, and it is hoped that through such exposure, students will be stimulated to develop an enquiring and caring attitude to the natural environment in their everyday lives. Research methods and techniques are introduced through the medium of research projects, undertaken by major students in their final year. The Kuala Belalong Field Studies Centre is a Centre is run by the Biology Department and provides accommodation and facilities for teaching, training and research into the lowland tropical rain forest of Brunei Darussalam. The research focus at Belalong is on Biodiversity, Ecology & Dynamics of the Rainforest. Many members of the Department carry out their research there and the Centre attracts scientists from all over the world. |
